How do I make PetCakes in a conventional oven?
Follow the directions but add 1 egg to the mix and pour into a small oven safe pan that has been sprayed with a non-stick coating (muffin tins work best). Cook at 350 for about 20 minutes. Cooking time can vary with different pans. Do not over-cook.
How long will PetCakes last?
After making PetCakes store any leftovers in a baggy or sealed container in the refrigerator for 1 week or in the freezer for up to 2 weeks. The treats must be completely cooled BEFORE they go into the refrigeration or they will not last as long and will be soggy.
What can I substitute for the peanut butter?
Canned pumpkin, plain yogurt, honey, unsweetened applesauce or pureed carrots, green beans or sweet potatoes ( think baby food versions with no salt or sugars added).
What else can I use to frost my PetCakes?
You can use creamy peanut butter, canned pumpkin, low fat cream cheese, yogurt or any combination of the previous ingredients. For example, combine cream cheese and canned pumpkin or yogurt and creamy peanut butter to get a nice smooth consistency for your frosting.
What if I don’t have a non-stick spray?
Use butter or any oil and apply to the pan with a paper towel.
What if I don’t have anything in my pantry to add?
PetCakes was created to be simple and to “just add water” to the mix. It will work with just water. Adding the extra ingredient adds to the fun factor and allows pet parents to customize their treats to their pets’ tastes. Yes, even the frosting works with just water, but looks more human like and is easier to spread when you add yogurt and honey.
What if the frosting is hard?
The frosting should be the consistency of powdered sugar. The frosting is 100% dehydrated yogurt and over time will harden or get clumpy, but is not outdated. It is still usable, but you must break up all the hard bits before adding the water. I use a sieve or the back of a spoon to make the frosting soft again.
What if the mix is too thick to pour?
Just add a little more water and stir each time until the consistency resembles a thick pancake batter.
What if the mix is too thin and watery?
Don’t worry, just put the mix into the refrigerator and it will eventually thicken (approximately 10-20 minutes depending on how watery the batter is). If it is still to watery, then cook the cakes for about 20 seconds longer to cook out excess liquid.
What the best way to mix all the ingredients?
Use a 2 Cup measuring cup with a spout instead of a bowl. Pour the water into the measuring cup first, add the mix and 1 tablespoon of suggested ingredient into cup. Then stir with a fork. Pour the pancake-like batter into the pans using the spout.
- 2 Cup measuring cup with spout (easier to pour into pans)
- Stir with a fork (prevents clumping)
