How to Clean Cat Ears: Cat Ear Cleaning Solutions
Does your cat have recurring, chronic ear issues? Does your cat have itchy ears? Are your cat’s ears smelly? Do your cat’s ears stink? Are they goopy? Does your cat suffer from feline ear infections regularly? Before we address why your cat has itchy, stinky, goopy ears, let’s get ‘em clean!
There are many over-the-counter or prescription solutions available to clean your cat's itchy ears. Many of those concoctions are loaded with chemicals and preservatives that unfortunately can do more harm than good. Did you know that many store bought solutions contain alcohol? For a tender ear, this can be a skin irritation causing dryness, more itching and a painful sting if the pet has an open wound or sensitive skin. OUCH!
Save some money and naturally help your cats itchy ears by using a safe and healing homemade ear solution. Below are a few of our favorite recipes and why:
Natural Ear Cleaning Agents:
- Witch Hazel - Many refer to Witch Hazel as nature's “Neosporin”. Witch Hazel works great to cleanse, protect against infection & encourage quicker healing of minor skin breaks. Witch Hazel also has great anti-inflammatory properties as well.
- Organic Apple Cider Vinegar and Purified Water. Mixed equal parts. – Apple cider vinegar has been used for decades for external and internal folk medicine. It has been proven to heal naturally and kill germs as well! This is a very gentle and effective solution that many pet owners turn to on a weekly basis for their pets ear health.
- Hydrogen Peroxide and Purified Water. Mixed equal parts – Besides the obvious use to cleanse wounds, Hydrogen Peroxide is one of the best ways to dissolve ear wax.
Always be careful of what you put into your cat’s ear. The ear is a VERY tender and delicate organ that is sensitive to chemicals and temperature. Do not use anything too cold or too hot in your cat’s ears.
- Chronic ear issues are a symptom of yeast overgrowth. And to resolve this issue, it must be fought from inside your cat…by implementing dietary changes. Stop feeding the yeast; feed your cat instead! Read: "Best Cat Food - how to make a good choice for your cat"
